AN 11-year-old girl from Gawber has planned a fundraising raffle in memory of her grandfather.

Mia Firth chose to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society after her grandad, Ricky, passed away from the illness a year ago at the age of 62.

She is doing a raffle at her school, Darton College, and her mum, Sarah, has been selling raffle tickets at Barnsley Hospital's dermatology unit.

Mia - whose homemade cake will go to the winner - has paid for its ingredients from her own pocket money.

Sarah said: "My dad died a year ago and on his anniversary Mia just said she wanted to raise some money for an Alzheimer's charity.

"I am so proud of my daughter and I would love everyone to know how kind, caring and thoughtful Mia has been."
