HALF of Barnsley's licensed taxis have failed to meet acceptable standards.
A series of safety checks has resulted in cars being ordered off the road and their drivers being issued a warning.
Faults found by inspectors include defective tyres and lights, inaccessible seat belts, faulty windows and a failure to complete compulsory safety check sheets.
The latest figure of 50 per cent has dropped from a peak of 80 per cent, a figure the council report describes as 'shocking and appalling'.
It stated: "Since the submission of the last report, the current vehicle failure rates have reduced by 30 per cent. While the figure is still unacceptable, operators must begin to accept responsibility for their failures and make a change.
"Enforcement operations like these will continue to take place on a quarterly basis."
The next licensing regulatory board meeting will be held on March 12.
