FIREFIGHTER and fitness fan Martin Sanders is working to save a Grimethorpe gym and community centre which is falling into disrepair.
The centre, formerly known as Lifestyles, closed in 2010 and fell prey to vandals. But now Martin and two fellow fitness enthusiasts have formed a Community Interest Company (CIC) to refurbish and relaunch it as New Options Community Fitness Centre.
They are currently seeking funding from the National Lottery and UnLtd - a charity which supports social enterprises - to pay for repairs to the building.
Martin said, "The gym has a fitness suite with running and rowing machines, a space for weights and also a dance/aerobics area. There is a sauna and steam room which we would look at opening later on."
He hopes for a return to the days when the centre was well used by the community, including fitness and weight loss groups.
He added, "Our mission is to make it really affordable for local people to improve their health and also to help regenerate the village."
