SHAW Lane at Carlton is closed in both directions as fire crews battle a blaze at an industrial unit.

More than 20 South Yorkshire firefighters are  at the unit on Boulder Bridge Lane - thought to be a recycling yard - which they say is well alight. A safety cordon has been put in place because there are several acetylene cylinders on the site.

A spokesman said: "Crews from Cudworth, Barnsley, Royston and Tankerlsey fire stations were called to the incident just before midnight, though these crews are currently being relieved by firefighters from elsewhere in the county. Firefighters will remain at the scene until the cylinders are no longer dangerous.

"Police have closed parts of Shaw Lane, close to the site of the industrial unit, which is believed to be a recycling yard.

"Currently it is too early to establish how the fire started, but a fire investigation will follow once the scene has been made safe."
