THE free park and ride service offered for Saturday shopping in the run up to Christmas has been abolished.

The service used to run from the Peel Centre but the council - which runs it - says passenger use has been falling year on year.

A spokesman said: "The provision of multiple parking areas in the town centre means Barnsley has sufficient space to cope with the higher-than-normal traffic levels caused by Christmas shoppers.

"This situation, coupled with the significant and continued pressure on council budgets, led to the decision to discontinue the park-and-ride service. The council continues to provide free parking on Saturdays in its car parks."
