POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a Barnsley pensioner died and another was injured after a LGV hit their broken down car yesterday (December 1).
The pensioner's car - a green Toyota Avensis - had broken down on the A635 facing towards Marr on Barnsley Road. The driver and passenger, both 72-year-old women from Barnsley, were still inside when it was hit from behind by a silver Mercedes large goods vehicle, overturning it.
The car driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger suffered slight cuts to her face and was treated at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
The LGV driver, a 38-year-old man also from Barnsley, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
A spokesman said: "South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash or anyone who saw the manner in which the goods vehicle was being driven just prior to it."
