WORKERS at a glass factory have suspended their threatened strike action.

Employees at Ardagh Glass were due to walk out but have put the industrial action on hold while union members discuss an improved 5.5 per cent two-year pay deal.

The improved offer came after long talks between Unite, the GMB union, Ardagh Glass management representatives and the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service.

The Monk Bretton-based firm's initial two per centre offer was met with fury and was rejected by 97 per cent of members in a consultative ballot.

The glassworks employs about 490 at Monk Bretton and made £65million in pre-tax profit last year.

Workers will start voting on the offer and the ballot is due to close on September 2.
