THE expected finish date of the long-running roadworks on the A61 has been put back once again.

As we reported here, Barnsley Council said the scheme would be finished in June but a spokesperson from the council later said: "It's anticipated that the works will be completed in August. The slight delay has been caused by the need to divert a water main."

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesperson for Development, Environment and Culture, said: "The essential element of the A61 works at Burton Road is the widening of Old Mill Lane to facilitate the installation of a new bus lane and traffic signal controlled junction.

"The road widening works involve the reconstruction of the south-east footway which is full of services. To avoid services being cut off they have to be diverted before the roadworks can progress.

"Since works recommenced on site last November, negotiations have been taking place with three cable suppliers and electric and water suppliers to arrange their diversions.

"These diversions are now due to be completed shortly and the road widening works will quickly follow. It is planned that works on site will be completed by the end of September 2013."
