MP Michael Dugher has congratulated Steve Houghton CBE after it was announced that he has been appointed Knights Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Mr Houghton has dedicated his life to the local community and public service. He has been a member of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council since 1988 and leader since 1996.

He receives his knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his parliamentary and political services.

Commenting, Michael Dugher said: "Steve Houghton has been a phenomenal leader for Barnsley for so many years, including in the toughest of times.

"He is rightly respected throughout the whole country as one of the brightest, most formidable champions for working class people and for the unemployed. He has been a brilliant public servant.

"It is a long way from the picket line to the Palace, but his knighthood is thoroughly deserved."
