ATHERSLEY Recreation Football Club feel 'snubbed' after being denied a friendly game with Barnsley FC to mark its promotion.
The Athersley club's first team manager, Pete Goodlad, asked for a friendly match against a Barnsley FC team, be it the first team, juniors or reserves, to celebrate Athersley making it to the NCEL Premier Division.
Pete said: "Because we got promotion and got some funding to do our ground, I was hoping Barnsley FC would give us a friendly to celebrate.
"I spoke to someone at the club and was eventually told they couldn't help us out because they had already fulfilled their fixtures with the first team.
"I said we weren't bothered about who they sent and that it would help us financially and would be good for the area - but the club rejected it.
"It's very disappointing really because the club is always saying it's a community club and there would have been a good crowd turn out to make a good do of it."
Barnsley FC's outgoing director, Don Rowing, said there are a lot of disappointed clubs this year as the Reds have been 'inundated' with requests.
He said it didn't receive one from Athersley Rec FC until late on and by then the club had already made plans for the season.
"That's the reason behind it and if clubs get requests in early we can do it," he said.
"It is not a personal thing and I am sure that if there is anything we can do to send representatives or players from the club to celebrate the night then we will.
"It is not something we like, saying no."
