A PRIMARY school headteacher has scooped a top award - being named headteacher of the year for the North of England.

Julie Allen, of Birkwood Primary, was presented with the accolade on Friday after being picked from thousands of applications.

She will now go into the national finals which take place in London in October and are televised on BBC Two.

"I'm incredibly excited and I think it's wonderful for our school and the community," Julie said. "I didn't actually know I'd won until the assembly last Friday so they had managed to keep it under wraps until then."

The Pearson Teaching Awards are open to every school in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

She was nominated by parent Steve Borrowdale, Dan Wood, Julie's deputy and the school community.
