A TEENAGE soldier has died and another man is critically injured in hospital after their car left the road near Shafton.

The two men, aged 18 and 25-years-old, both from Grimethorpe, were travelling in a silver Peugeot 306 convertible on Engine Lane, from the direction of Shafton, that left the road negotiating a slight left-hand bend.

Officers believe the car was travelling in excess of the speed limit when it left the road at 3.15am on Sunday.

The car struck a street lamp and continued along the footpath through a garden into the front of a local property, causing extensive damage to a boundary wall and the front of the house.

The two men were thrown from the car and Josh Powell, 18, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Mr Powell, of Grimethorpe, was a soldier in the Army’s Light Dragoons.

The 25-year-old man sustained 'life-threatening' injuries and is receiving treatment at Barnsley Hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or the car's movements prior to it leaving the road should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 218 of Sunday 19 May 2013.
