A HOLIDAY romance in 1950 led to love and 60 years of marriage for Kathleen and Harold Gerrard.

The couple, of Pogmoor Road, met in Blackpool in September 1950 when Kathleen was 16 and Harold was 18.

Harold was originally from Todmorden and would cycle to Barnsley every Friday night from Castleton, where he worked as an engineering draftsman, to see Kathleen, who worked at the National Coal Board as a secretary, before returning home on Sunday evening.

The wedding, on May 2, 1953, was arranged within seven days because Harold, who was in the RAF on National Service, was posted to Iraq for two years - just four weeks after their wedding day.

Harold and Kathleen, now 81 and 79 respectively, celebrated at The Three Acres with friends and family, including ten relatives from Australia.
