BARNSLEY MP Michael Dugher is demanding government action after new figures revealed youth unemployment is at an all time high in Barnsley.
Statistics show that 36 per cent of those aged 18 to 24 are claiming Job Seekers Allowance and 2,575 are without work - an increase of 11 per cent in just 12 months.
Michael, said: “The Government has been warned about the rising problem of unemployment for over a year now, but it is just not doing enough. Unemployment and youth unemployment are now at crisis levels with more young people out of work than ever before. Getting people – particularly our young people – into work is the surest way of getting the deficit down and putting us on the right course for the future. The Government must change direction now and implement a new plan for jobs and growth.”
Across Barnsley the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance has rocketed by eight per cent in one year, 7,140.
We hope to have Michael in the WAB Radio studio soon to answer questions on this: if you have any questions, thoughts or ideas on how things could be improved put them here and we will include them in the debate.
