A NATIONWIDE supermarket has turned its Barnsley store into a skills academy to keep traditional trades such as butchery, bakery and fishmongery.

Three butchers and two bakers have already completed apprenticeships at the Morrisons store.

As part of his year-long training programme to gain a qualification in butchery, the store's latest apprentice, 22-year-old Scott Kirk will shadow a master butcher as well as completing four, week-long intensive training courses at Birmingham College.

Key training at the Barnsley store includes making sure five members of staff have completed butchery and bakery apprenticeships, 26 weeks of training for fishmongers, introducing additional craft products such as sausage making and lessons in food and wine matching for 30 staff on the produce, deli and beers, wines and spirits department.

Many supermarkets removed these trades in the 1980s and 1990s to save costs but Morrisons kept its butchers, bakers and fishmongers and has invested in counters at the Barnsley store to make sure much of the food in store is prepared each morning.

Store manager David Schofield, said: “We have more skilled craftsmen and women on our counters than any other supermarket and pride ourselves on the knowledge and advice that they can offer to customers."
