A PROJECT run at Barnsley FC which encourages overweight fans to get fit has scooped a national award.

The Fit Reds scheme won a NHS Innovation Award and £2,000 prize money in the primary care category for its work over the last year.

NHS Barnsley staff along with Barnsley FC’s education health officer use the first-team facilities at Oakwell for an eight-week programme aimed at men over 35.

So far, 66 men have completed the course and have lost a combined total of 42 stone 12 pounds in weight.
