A MAN claimed £18,623 in benefits while having more than £53,000 in three bank accounts, Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told.

David Joseph Harrison, 45, of Gawber, had inherited the money following his father's death, said Waseem Raja, prosecuting.

He said Harrison failed to tell the Department of Work and Pensions he had come into some money.

"Mr Harrison claimed housing and council tax benefits and in 2010 declared he had no savings," said Mr Raja.

"He had three Halifax bank accounts which had received three substantial deposits amounting to more than £53,000."

Harrison - who admitted five charges of fraud by false representation - was sent to Sheffield Crown Court for sentencing on April 23. He was granted unconditional bail.
