BARNSLEY has kept its front desk reception amid policing budget cuts - but the number to contact local police will change.

South Yorkshire Police has reduced its number of enquiry desks in police stations – where people can come in to report a crime, seek help, or produce documents – from 19 to six, but Churchfields in Barnsley remains open.

And now, on October 4, the non-emergency number (currently 01142 202020) will change to 101. This will allow people to report incidents less urgent than 999, gain crime prevention advice and talk to their Safer Neighbourhood Team.
