A PROTECTED ash tree at Cannon Hall will be cut down and replaced by an oak.

The tree was safeguarded by a tree preservation order but Barnsley councillors voted to have it removed because of a large split in the trunk, which was seen as a health and safety issue.

Cllr Doug Birkinshaw said: "As far as I'm concerned those trees shouldn't have been cut down."

Council officers recommended a review of trees in the park covered by preservation orders.
