A FIFTY-YEAR-OLD pub is to be converted into a supermarket, a national chain has confirmed.

A planning application was recently submitted to the council by the Co-op for the erection of a series of signs and fascias on the former Longbow pub in Darfield.

The company submitted plans last year to add a new shop front and cash machine, which were approved by the council, but has only just confirmed it has acquired the site.

A smaller Co-op already trades across the road from the site, but a spokesman for The Co-operative Food would not comment on the future of this store or its staff.

He said: "We are pleased to announce that we have recently acquired the site of the former Longbow pub, on Barnsley Road, and that planning permission has been approved. We look forward to opening a new store later in the year."
