A CUDWORTH primary school headteacher has been shortlisted for a teaching award.

Birkwood Primary School's Julie Allen beat off competition from more than 24,000 teachers and school workers nominated for this year's Pearson Teaching Awards.

Julie said: "I was thrilled, embarrassed and humbled to find out that I had been nominated by one of our parents."

The awards are open to every school in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

She was put forward for the award by parent Steve Borrowdale with support from Dan Wood, Julie's deputy, and the school community.

"We've had our best Ofsted outcomes and our best results at Key Stage Two level," Julie added. "I'm lucky I have a wonderful team of staff and support from the governors and parents, for which I'm very grateful."

If Julie is successful in her category, she will progress to the national finals later this year.

Results for the award will be announced on May 17.
