AN action group set up to tackle vandalism and neglect in an Athersley South park is closing due to a lack of new volunteers.
Athersley South Action Group formed during the summer of 2008 when a community park opened at the side of Blessed Sacrament RC Church on Matlock Road.
The group of residents were brought together by mutual disappointment at vandalism and overall neglect of the park, and decided to do something about it.
But almost five years on and the remaining members, Eleanor Stott, Cath Harper, Lisa Johnson, Cyril Helsby and Carol Hardcastle, have decided it will close on April 3.
"We raised funds through community galas which were very successful, and did weekly litter picks on the park encouraging the young people to join in by offering a reward scheme," said Eleanor.
"Over the last 12 months we have been advertising for volunteers and nobody has come forward. I'm devastated this has had to happen," she added.
