A DETERMINED war veteran from Hoyland has finally been able to apply for a service medal after nearly 60 years of battling for recognition.

Ken Burkinshaw, 89, applied for an Arctic Star medal following a meeting of the West Riding Branch of The Russian Convoy Club.

Ken is chairman of the branch and found out that veterans could apply for the award after years of campaigning.

The Ministry of Defence is producing the medal for the brave seaman who delivered vital supplies to Russia via the Arctic Sea in subzero temperatures during the Second World War.

The medal is also available to relatives of veterans who have died.

"It's sad that there are so many veterans that have died and their widows have died as well," said Ken. "Sixty odd years is a long time but the battle has been worthwhile."

Ken served aboard HMS Sheffield when he was only 16. He completed nine trips to Russia in minus 35-40 degree conditions.
