BARNSLEY'S market traders are to be moved to a new location which will spread from Cheapside to Peel Street.

The location of the new market - which is a temporary measure to allow for demolition of the old one - will stretch from the Alhambra Centre all the way across the town up towards the post office. The council say they imagine the market area will stay in its newer position until 2015, when the new development is finished.

The application - which was approved by Barnsley Council yesterday - outlines plans for 40 stalls that have striped roofs. Traders have been warned they will not be able to spread out their wares, but only trade in their stall boundary.

A spokesman said: "It is considered to be fundamentally important to the economic vitality of the town centre that existing market traders are accommodated during the construction of the market project

"It is considered that the proposal will have a positive impact upon the street scene with the traders providing a more vibrant and active street scene."

Planters, the mushroom seating area, and seats will be removed to make way for it.
