BARNSLEY Youth Theatre continues to go from strength to strength and is about to launch an exciting new initiative.
The group will hold weekly workshops at Dearne Playhouse to give opportunities to young people outside of the town centre areas.
Artistic director Jack Riley said: “We're launching a new BYT initiative at the Dearne Playhouse, which has recently received significant funding to transform its old basement into a vibrant Cultural Communities Hub.
“This new space boasts two generous rehearsal rooms, a communal theatre area, and a sound-treated music room. Recognising that many opportunities are centred in town, we wanted to bring BYT closer to the people of Goldthorpe.
“We're excited to host weekly workshops every Tuesday from 6pm to 7:30pm.
“Additionally, we're collaborating with RSPB Old Moor to create giant lanterns for a parade through Barnsley town centre as part of the Bright Nights event. And we also have an opportunity to perform in a winter/Christmas production in the playhouse's main theatre.
“We're genuinely excited about these developments.. Great things are happening in Goldthorpe!”
The theatre company received more than £26,000 funding from Arts Council England last year and has been working hard to get more youngsters off the streets and involved with the project.
Jack joined the theatre as a youngster and he said it helped him keep on the straight and narrow: “When I joined as a youngster it really gave me a lot of opportunities I might not have had otherwise. It put me on a path which meant that I wasn’t misbehaving or out on the streets.”
“We’re now able to promote so many more opportunities.”
