A STUDENT from Barnsley College is through to the regional final of The Golden Apron Awards.

Sarah Harrison entered the cookery competition along with students from over 350 schools and colleges, which is designed to find Yorkshire’s best young chef.

Participants had to create a dish using locally-sourced pork as a core ingredient, working with a £10 budget for two servings.

She chose to produce a dish of belly pork in ginger beer, served with potato cakes, spring greens and chantenay carrots.

Course leader Claire Taylor, said: “Sarah created the recipe herself and has done really well to get through to the regional final as competition was really high.”

On March 3, Sarah will battle it out with 16 other contestants.

Sarah said: “It has been a really exciting and daunting experience. I’m really nervous about the next step, but I can see the benefit of entering this competition for my career progression.''

The winner of the competition will go to the Pipe and Glass restaurant and be mentored by its Michelin Star awarded chef, James Mackenzie.
