A VETERAN is looking for an old Barnsley friend in his bid to bring together an old band of National Service buddies for a get-together.
Trevor Currie, 85, served at the Ironside Barracks in Germany between the years of 1959 and 1961 – a place he says became ‘home’.
During that time, Trevor – who now lives in Guisborough – built friendships with his fellow servicemen of the Seventh Armoured Brigade Group and in his old age is hoping to reconnect.
He’s already made contact with two people, though his search has now brought him to Barnsley as he looks for David Woodhouse, who he knows was married in the town centre’s St Mary’s Church.
Trevor said: “It wasn’t a bad job for £2 a week and a shilling off for haircuts and barrack room damages. I got some photographs from David’s wedding and I identified the architecture as St Mary’s.
“We were all good friends so I’ve been trying to get together with a few of the people who are still alive.
“Obviously we’re all getting older so it’s difficult. Originally we’ve only planned to meet up with just a few bottles of wine, but if we can get a few more we’ll do something bigger.”
