FUTURE generations of Barnsley residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a woodland of majestic oaks close to the site of the former Barnsley Main colliery thanks to a tree-planting project currently underway.

Up to 10,000 native oaks will be planted close to Oaks Lane, and other council-owned locations in Barnsley by volunteers from a range of organisations.

The tree-planting scheme will create a total of 10 hectares of woodland as part of the Dearne Valley Green Heart Nature Improvement Area project underway within the borough.

Barnsley Council is one of the leading organisations behind the Dearne Valley Green Heart Partnership which has been awarded Nature Improvement Area (NIA) status by government - one of twelve across the country as part of a national competition.
