BARNSLEY Council’s ruling cabinet members voted to approve ‘restructuring’ plans in order to reduce Cineworld’s rent at a behind-closed-doors meeting.
Cineworld – which signed a 20-year lease for the 13-screen venue in the town centre’s Glass Works – said it had been forced to seek a rent decrease ‘against a background of increasingly high and unsustainable operating costs’.
The council said members voted in favour of the ‘restructuring plans put forward by the tenant having considered the options and implications’.
Coun Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “Having considered the options, cabinet agreed to vote in favour of the restructuring plans.
“These plans will include a relatively small rent reduction which will still be in line with market rent for the building and will continue to deliver a financial return on investment to the council.”
