TENS of thousands of pounds will be spent on artwork to make the town centre look 'more attractive and welcoming'.
The Sheffield Road underpass will have around £10,000 lavished on it, with ideas so far including theatre lighting and quotes to be written on its walls.
A further £40,000 will be used on four pieces of artwork on the main entrances to the town - although the locations for these are still to be decided.
The money, plus an additional £20,000, has come from the developer of Oakwell Garage on Pontefract Road, as a condition of its planning approval.
Cllr Margaret Bruff said: "We have got to keep Barnsley as a place people want to come to. We are nice people in Barnsley - why shouldn't we have a bit of culture?"
