MP Dan Jarvis has called for the government to create more quality apprenticeships for young people in Barnsley.

He has backed Labour leader Ed Milliband's call for 33,000 apprenticeships to be created as part of the building of the high-speed HS2 routes in Britain.

In December, 12.3 per cent of young people in Barnsley were claiming jobseekers' allowance and Mr Jarvis said with one million young people across Britain currently unemployed, the building of HS2 was a great opportunity to give a boost to their prospects.

“The building of HS2 is a chance to create a new generation of skilled British workers rather than just waste the talent of those growing up wondering if they will ever get a decent job,'' said Mr Jarvis.

“But it's not enough to just build a new route between London and Leeds - we need to give all young people in Barnsley a route to their futures and that starts in our schools and colleges.”
