PLANS to demolish the former Wombwell Catholic Club have been approved by the council.
The 53-year-old building will be dismantled 'as soon as possible', according to Tom Garrud, property manager for the Diocese of Hallam.
He said the Park Street site, which is adjacent to St Michael and All Angels' Catholic Church, would not be redeveloped and the car park would continue to be in use after demolition.
After struggling for a number of years, the club closed its doors for the final time in May 2011 - following its 50th anniversary celebrations at Christmas 2010.
It had closed more than once as successive committees collapsed and new ones were formed to save the historic building.
Although the present building opened in 1960, there had been a Catholic club in Wombwell for 30 years previously, originally operating out of an old farm house.
