BARNSLEY Council is using 9,450 used car tyres to surface a 2.1km stretch of the Trans Pennine Trail.
Instead of them languishing in a landfill site, they're to be used on an all-weather surface between Penistone and Thurlstone.
Work started on the new flexi pave surface in November 2012 and despite battling intense rain, days of sub-zero temperatures and then snow, KBI UK are due to complete the work this week.
Leisure users of the popular route are set to be pleased with the new surface - as it makes for easier access for mobility scooter users and families with young children.
The works have been funded from Barnsley Council’s Rights of Way Improvement Plan budget and a grant from East Peak Innovation Partnership.
