THE Cooper Gallery is celebrating after a £46,600 grant.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) development grant has been awarded to help the gallery progress its plans to apply for a full grant of just under £635,000 at a later date.

The Cooper Gallery: Creating Connections project is about attracting more people through its doors. They're hoping to increase on their 50,000 annual figure in 2014 - their centenary year.

This new funding will allow the gallery to extend its spaces, restore the original entrance, and provide more voluntary opportunities.

Paul Elmhirst, chair of the Cooper Gallery trustees, said: “As well as improving the facilities of the gallery, the project will provide a focus for celebrating the centenary of the Cooper Art Gallery and the foresight of those remarkable Barnsley benefactors who made it possible.”
