MANY hot food takeaways in Barnsley have been found to be putting staff and customers at risk by having unsafe gas appliances.

Barnsley Council's Regulatory Services are visiting every takeaway in town to make sure they have everything up to scratch. But shocking findings show that almost three quarters of the businesses visited so far have loose and damaged pipework, no gas safety records, and no means of turning off the gas if something goes wrong.

The takeaways have now been told to fix the problems.

Coun Roy Miller said: "The key message we aim to give to food business operators are that essential maintenance must not be cut even at this difficult economic time."
