PLANS to demolish a snooker club and build 36 bedsits in its place have been submitted to the council.
Miles Rodgers has submitted an application to the council to demolish Wombwell Snooker and Social Club to make way for the two blocks of 18 bedsits on three floors.
It attributes 'the recession and the smoking ban' to the Marsh Street club becoming 'unsustainable as a business' and with the design of the building making it unsuitable for refurbishment.
But business partner Brian Pilkington, who runs KG's on Kelvin Grove, said club members had nothing to fear for the time being.
He said: "It's just a contingency plan because of the state of the economy at the moment. We have no plans to close the club or demolish the building but it's something that may happen in the future."
