THE Barnsley Metrodome's gym will find out at the end of the month if it has won a prestigious award.

The gym is one of six facilities shortlisted in the Local Authority / Leisure Trust Gym of the Year category of the National Fitness Awards - beating off competition from hundreds of nominations nationwide.

The National Fitness Awards are the biggest and best free-to-enter awards in the gym industry and they recognise excellence, innovation and hard work.

National Fitness Awards event director Judith Halkerston said: "All our shortlisted gyms have beaten off stiff competition to make it through to the finals. The quality of entries was exceptionally high this year and it was a daunting task to choose the top six but we believe we have made the right choices and we congratulate all the gyms for getting this far."

Trophies will be handed out at an ceremony on November 30 at The Athena in Leicester, hosted by personal trainer and TV personality Charlotte Ord.

BPL (Barnsley Premier Leisure) first took over the Barnsley Metrodome back in 1999.

It had 400 members back then but now has over 4,200 members.

Chief executive Tim Wilson said: “To be nominated for a National Fitness Award is a phenomenal honour. It’s a true testament to the hard work from everyone involved in the making the product it is today.”
