PROPERTIES in Bolton on Dearne will be protected against flooding thanks to a £274,000 grant from the Environment Agency.
The cash will be spent on the 48 houses on Mexborough Road, Lowfield Road, Meadowgates and Riverside Gardens that were inundated by the high floodwaters of June 2007.
Flood consultation surveys will be carried out to assess what measures will need to be put in place, with work beginning in the new year.
Options include air-brick covers, and removable door barriers put in place at times of flood risk to provide a watertight seal on external doors.
One-way valves for waste pipes will also be fitted to prevent flood water flowing up the property's waste water and sewage pipes.
Council spokesman Coun Roy Miller said: “I’m pleased that we have been successful in getting this funding which is much needed in the Dearne. These works are a positive move by Barnsley Council in supporting residents in this area.”
