BARNSLEY Council has been asked to clarify its ownership of £5.7m of assets - including a prized painting at Cannon Hall.
The 18th century oil on canvas landscape by Italian artist Canaletto is called Capriccio: a Colonnade Opening on to the Courtyard of a Palace. It depicts courtyard in Venice.
District auditor Rob Chambers said there was 'limited documentation' relating to the ownership of the painting and other 'heritage assets'.
He has asked the council to clarify the ownership of them.
