A MAJOR restaurant chain has confirmed it will be moving to Barnsley when the £125 million town centre revamp is completed.
The scheme, due to be completed in 2015, will include a Debenhams, a seven screen Odeon, 850 parking spaces, 35 shops and several restaurants including a Nando's.
Tony Baker, director of 1249 Regeneration Partnership which is overseeing the project, said: ''People have very preconceived ideas of Barnsley.
''There are pockets of low income areas but equally there are some very affluent ones.
''I would say that we are making good progress in assembling retailers to accept the scheme. It's been well-received in the market place and we hope to start work next year. ''
Robert Teal, chairman of Barnsley Voice, a group of town centre businesses, added: ''Barnsley businesses have never lost faith in the town and knew that the redevelopment would happen in time.
''As far as retail is concerned what will be important is to attract a new kind of customer as well as keeping our existing customers happy.''
