THE doctor's surgery and walk-in centre at Gateway Plaza is to close in November, it has been announced.

NHS Barnsley and Nestor Primecare Services Limited have revealed the GP practice will be no more from November 30 - despite the fact that it had been a success in meeting patient demand.

NHS Barnsley's Chief Operating Officer, Steve Wainwright, said: “It is with regret that we have taken the decision to close the practice as there is no doubt it has proved a success in meeting patient demand for GP services. Despite this, we must commission local services to meet the needs of Barnsley people and I am satisfied that existing GP practices and the out of hours service are suitable for this purpose.

“The walk-in element of the service has been closed since October 2010 and was introduced to help reduce the workload in A&E at the hospital. To date there has been no reduction in patients attending hospital as a result of the service.

“I would like to thank Nestor Primecare for the excellent service at the health centre and for its continued commitment to providing health care to the people of Barnsley.”

NHS Barnsley wrote on our Facebook wall this morning to say it will shortly be writing to all registered patients to reassign them to a different GP practice, along with information on how to re-register with another GP in their area, should this not be the practice of their choice.

The closure does not affect the dentist.
