i used to love it at the birdcage in hoyland in the late 70s early 80s , when i used to live in essex and visit this area with my boyfriend from around here , it was great , so much different and better then the night clubs down south, the plam trees added to the ambience and the atmosphere was great , no need to fork out on taxis to stumble back down the hill in my white stilettoes back then lol , sadly it burnt down and all that remains in its place are new flats , will always have my memories of fab nights grooving away at the birdcage , does anyone else remember it when they used to go ?  lynn cooper , elsecar

Yeah!!! Best nights I ever had were there. People would flock from surrounding areas for a great night out. Couldn't keep me away.  :0)

Back in 1967 I wanted to be a DJ. I had already got myself a small collection of imported soul records, bought mainly at Jumbo records in Leeds, when it was just a pokey little shop on a balcony of one of the many Arcades there. My favourite place in Barnsley was The Hub on Peel Street [later The Stables]. Two bob to get in, a stamp on your wrist and you were in the meeting place for anyone with a scooter. There were'nt any "resident DJs" as such, but if you had the right records you could grow a reputation and the guy on the decks was happy to play what you wanted.
