Penistone Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) has been teaching day-trippers how to ensure they avoid becoming victims of theft this summer in a vulnerable vehicle blitz.
PCSOs Joanne Weatherall and Anthony Holmes spent the day touring various beauty spots throughout Penistone, looking for vehicles left open or with valuables on show to highlight the dangers and offer crime prevention advice.
They explained to drivers the importance of ensuring windows and doors are kept locked when parked up and the possible consequences of leaving valuables such at sat navs and laptops, visible on car seats.
On the day, officers found gave out 49 vehicle advice letters to members of the public.
From the year ending March 2009 to the year ending March 2010, the number of thefts from a vehicle in Barnsley decreased by 17 per cent, that’s 2214 less victims of crime.
Police believe this figure will keep on improving if everyone ensures they follow the basic crime prevention advice.
PCSO Anthony Holmes said: “Try not to leave any valuables in your car at all but if you have to, make sure they are completely out of sight and not visible through a window. Never leave your car window or door unlocked. One second is all it takes for a potential thief to break in. Following these simple rules will go a long way in keeping your vehicle and your belongings safe.”
