Council house tenants set for rent decrease; £138 million programme approved

Thursday January 11 2018

COUNCIL house tenants are set to pay one per cent less in rent from April this year while £138 million will be ploughed into maintaining council housing, BMBC has announced.

Barnsley Council's Cabinet approved the 2018/19 Housing Revenue Account budget at its meeting earlier this week.

As part of the budget, the council has approved a reccomendation to lower rent by one per cent from April 2018.

The final approval on the rent will be discussed at the Full Council meeting on February 5.

Meanwhile, the council also approved the 2018/23 Capital Investment Programme for council housing.

It means that £138 million will be invested into making sure council housing is well maintained and meets the needs of residents over the next five years.

The council says the programme also helps people to stay independent by providing equipment and adaptations to their homes where needed.
