Town centre parking charges set to increase

Monday June 5 2017

PARKING charges in town centre car parks operated by Barnsley Council are set to increase later this year.

From the middle of next month it will cost an extra 30p to park for an hour, up to two hours will cost £2.20 (up 60p from £1.60) while a four hour stay will cost £3.20 - an increase of 70p from £2.50.

The council says the increased charges will generate additional income of £120,000 per year which can be spent on delivering its priorities.

The revised prices will be advertised by statutory notice before coming into effect. However, the council says locals will still be able to take advantage of free parking on weekends.

As part of the changes, the council says it will remove time restrictions from short stay on-street locations.

New ticket machines will also mean people can make cashless payments using chip and pin. The proposed ticket machine replacement plan will begin this summer.
