Barnsley's 'Banksy' - Should It Stay Or Go?

Monday October 3 2011

SPECULATION is rife as to who is responsible for the grafitti that has appeared on the new £50 million Barnsley College building over the weekend.

The image of two policemen kissing – made famous by Banksy – has been drawn in black paint on one of the new pillars for the college, on Eastgate.

We are awaiting a statement from Barnsley College now as to if it is to be removed or not but we wondered - what do you think?

Is it art or is it vandalism?

Here are some of the views from our Facebook users:
Adele Haywood: They look to have done a good job :)

Kelly Roberts: looks good!

Gary Motloch: Blatant vandalism, you shouldn't give it the media coverage it'll only encourage whoever is responsible...

Alison Limbert: I cant get over all the detail in it

We Are Barnsley: ‎Barnsley College just rang - story updated shortly...Leila Garner I think it luks gud

Jonny Rodgers: Looks kinda good

Lesley Drury-Chan: I like it

Zoe Adam Sheriff: KEEP KEEP looks MINT!!

Dawn Guest: why 2 policemen kissing tho? Has sum1 actually busted 2 policemen kissing?

Andrew J Randle: It should stay even if the college is new it should be shown more and whoever did it has got balls for a start off

Keith Hudson: Vandalism... The people suggesting it should stay would kick up a fuss if it was put on the front of their house.

Vicki Ashton: looks good, it's always inTeresting to have something different on view!!

Cherry Amour Handcrafted Jewellery: I'm going to go against the tide here and say it should go: it's not often we get investment in Barnsley and I think it's sad that something that cost so much money should be vandalised. If you look right behind the pillar there are some blank construction boards - if they wanted to get their art out there, they could have quite easily painted on that and not on a brand new £50m building! I wouldn't have had a problem with it had it been on those boards to add a bit of interest for a while. But something so permanent as the college? It's a real shame.

Beverley Green Gibson: why 2 police men kissing? think it should go.

Craig 'paddy' Wadsworth: i believe something like that is art but all the lil chavs that go round "tagging" is just pants!! i think they should do something else on each column as long as the person that does it is good

Lorna Baker: i think it should stay. Banksy is fab! Even though it may not be his work it is a piece he uses x

Nadine Benn: I agree with both sides its ashame a new building got picked for the graffiti but I like the style of it even more for it being a banksy cover but would it change ppls minds if banksy did it or would they still state its vandalism when its still seen as art of expression the only down side is the location u picked to portrait it :)

Lorna Baker: i think it should stay. Banksy is fab! Even though it may not be his work it is a piece he uses

Suzanne Thompson: Its criminal damage at the end of the day....why put this image on such a great piece of workmanship...the college is beautiful and stands proud on the skyline. It needs to be removed to the cost of however put it there.

Kezzabella Bettoni: Keep it! It looks a darn sight better than the usual kids scrawl that you see on buildings in barnsley!

Nice job reporting it all and my first blog still stands I understand both sides but I still see graffiti as art of expression just wish locations would be picked better specially when barnsley rarely gets budgeted and when we so its used as a canvass for something that could of been put some where else we needs loads of billboards with blank paper put up so graffiti artists can express thereself without vandalising new buildings :)

Is it against the law? Yes. Will it encourage more to happen if you leave it? Yes. Do we want loads of grafiti in Barnsley? No.
So - get rid of it.

Why imitate when you can innovate? Try to be original graf writers of Barnsley. Be inspired by King Robbo...

Do i see graffiti as an art of expression - yes if its on your OWN prperty. No if its on someone elses. Get rid of it.

Not original, not imaginative, and the art equivalent of a plagiarised piece of work that the college would never promote for students wishing to be treated as individuals wishing to enter higher education. Humorous for people who are fans of Banksy maybe?  Or who have never viewed any of his pieces, but definetely vandalism given the amount of monies that Barnsley taxpayers have contributed to a building that actually promotes the town, and gives it a modern feel despite the stereotypes. Surely one of the empty shop hoardings would have been more appropriate canvas for our budding Cezanne......

Get rid of it its disgusting!!!!! all that money that as just been spent on improving college and this appears. If it is left it will just be added to and before long it will be full of graffitti if the person responsible was brave enough to own up to doing it they should be giving the job of removing it!!! and if their that interested in art why not put their talents to good use and enrole in a art course which i'm sure would be on offer at the college. The world as gone mad if it is allowed to be left on.
