Debate: Vandalism or Art?

Friday August 19 2011

Street Art Street Art

An arts project created by recovering drug addicts and alcoholics has come to town - and this is one of the installations.
It appeared on the wall at the side of Mad Mix and it's generating lots of debate - what do you think? Is it vandalism or is it art?

The 'Alternative Nite Out' project takes place in Barnsley on Thursday, 25 August and will include a tour of street artwork installations of paintings and poetry, developed by individuals including people in recovery from drugs and alcohol.

What do you think?

This is art.. Where people take time in doing it and it looks good.
Vandalism is where people trash stuff and write their name on a wall with spray paint.

Well thats my opinion :p

This is real art in the real world. There's too many dull, boring n messed up walls in barnsley its about time we let people like the lad/lass that's done this brighten our streets. keep up the good work

Like I just posted on F/B ,there was a time in Barnsley where "Spray Art" was an increasing pastime ,the work was good ,colourful and very well done in the majority of cases .
The Council decided ,which I admire, to allocate areas where these people could express themselves through a can ,the work continued to be as good if not better as there where no risks involved .
It's a good way of developing prospective artists and rehabi'n people ,just to make them part of a group again ,giving them self esteem and a feeling of involvement with things is only one part of the complexity of rehab but a vital key .
Of course it's Art ,if disected humans in glass cases in London is ART then surely expressing yourself through a spray can creating peices is equally as good after all a wall freesprayed is far more complex than hanging a chritsmas tree in the art museum with no decorations on it ...?
Go figure ...Perhaps commisison some of these guys to do seminars round the country "How I rehab'd using expression through art" not everyones cup of tea but if you dunt try you'll niver know eh ...?

I agree with all of what you've said. It's like a freedom of speech, but sometimes it's really depends on what you are putting on those walls or what message you would like to tell to others. There might be bad arts and a good arts which you can tell that are fascinating arts.

Well its defiantly not vandalism , its an organised exhibition around Barnsley by a group of people recovering from alcohol addiction as part of an alternative to drinking, called Art Crawl, is going on display on Thursday. I think its unfair to dismiss it as 'vandalism'. Go to The Civic from 4 on Thursday as there is an organised 'crawl'

Art!  It's lovely.  It's only the bits of scraggy so called grafitti that is not art - but that's in my opinion.

i feel it's art, and much nicer than some of the "art" ppl sell n try and charge £'s for, but having said that each person will have an opinon on what art is.

It IS art, anyone who has ever tried using spray paint, will know how hard it is just to paint a car, the folks doing this art form  are highly skilled, and passionate about their art! good on em, and I just hope that it can be encouraged.
