Barnsley Celebrates Independents Day
Wednesday July 4 2012
INDEPENDENT shops in the town centre are running some discounts and offers today as Barnsley celebrates Independents’ Day.
Figures show that almost 75 per cent of the businesses in the town are independent of larger, regional or UK-wide retail organisations compared to just 45 per cent nationally.
Coun Linda Burgess said: "This shows clearly that Barnsley is a different and far more exciting type of shopping experience.
“Unlike many other places across the country, then, Barnsley is not a clone of other town centres, and attracts shoppers from near and far thanks to its high proportion of unique and specialist shops.
“That’s why we’re asking shoppers to recognise the skills behind the shopfront by buying at least one item from an independent retailer.”
