Plan To Overhaul Barnsley's Diabetes Care Service

HEALTH experts are looking to overhaul the service offered to diabetes sufferers in Barnsley - by asking them what they'd like to see.

People with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are being invited to give their views to the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYPFT) and Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Latest figures show that around six per cent of locals over 17 years old have diabetes - a figure that is significantly higher than other areas.

Dr Keith Sands said: “We would like to invite anyone who uses or has recently used any diabetes services in Barnsley to get involved. Patient experience is key to this redesign to ensure that we are providing care that suits everyone’s needs. It is important that we involve as many people as possible and listen to what people want. Local people will be able to help us improve services for now and in the future.”

The last time i took my child who is type 1. The foreign doctor in a&e who was in charge asked me why my son blood sugar goes up and down. I said its what happens to diabetics. I got his coat and walked out. I know more about my sons diabetes than the specialist he's under.

A work friend has been diabetic for many years whereas I am recently diagnosed. She lives in a neighbouring health authority and was invited to a "Desmond" course. All attendees took a supporter and I went as hers. It was excellent and we all came away with a personal plan and a much better understanding of diabetes. It was a very practical day and I would recommend it to anyone.

I will be getting in touch, the Diabetic Speacialist nurses are so stretched it took 6 weeks to get an emergency appointment and phoning my appointed nurse is like trying to dig for gold. We really need more speacialist nurses to cope with demand. Though overall they do a good job with the resourses they have.

I attend the Diabetic and Endocrinology department at BDGH due to an endocrinology problem. The place is full of people at all times and is basically a corridor with chairs for a waiting room. It is hot and airless. Staff could not give two figs and the endos are useless.
Diabetics admittedly get poor care but many I have spoken to are overweight type 2 diabetics who will not take care of themselves properly. As for any anyone with any other type of illness apart from diabetes well forget it!! Its a shambles.
