Decision On New Street Supermarket Expected

A DECISION on whether another major supermarket will be built across the road from Morrisons is due to be taken next month.

Sainsbury’s and Tesco are both understood to be interested in opening new stores in Barnsley.

A planning application for a 100,000 sq ft site which includes the former Gala Bingo hall on New Street and the former hat company on the corner of New Street and Wood Street, is due to be considered by councillors this month.

Developer Spectrum Investment Management has submitted the application and is in negotiation with ‘two of the big three supermarkets’.

Spokesman Peter MacFarlane said: “There have been various concerns raised and we have been working to resolve
those.

“We believe we have addressed, or will be able to address all of the concerns, and that the outcome will be a positive one.

“If we get planning permission in June, there’ll be a period of about six months of tidying up loose ends before we can get on site.

“It’s quite likely that it will be next spring when you start to see the main activity.”

Last year, Peel Holdings announced plans for a major supermarket on Harborough Hill Road on land now occupied by Comet, Plumb Centre, Howden’s Joinery, and a gas holder operated by National Grid.

That application has yet to be submitted to the council, but a spokesman said it was hoped to be ready soon.

Not another supermarket, how ridiculous! If Tesco or Sainsbury's come into town can't see that they will do that well as they are both more expensive than Morrisons, Asda, Lidl and of course Aldi - what is the point?

I like supermarkets for the conveinience but THERE ARE TOO MANY. And now saturating the town centre as well, My main concern is that the profits made from supermarkets will not be invested back in our town, local traders probably would.
